How to Zero a Rifle in 5 Shots (Without Walking Downrange Twice)

Most of the ammo wasted at a zeroing bench goes to one habit: fire a shot, dial, fire another, dial again, repeat until the box is light. The efficient version of the classic process is older than any app: rough in the sights, fire one careful group, measure the group center's offset from your point of aim, convert that to clicks, dial once, and confirm. Done cleanly, that's a 3-shot group plus a 2-shot confirmation — five rounds — with one measuring trip downrange instead of a hike after every shot.

Why chasing single shots wastes ammo

No rifle puts every bullet through the same hole. Your rifle, your ammo, and you together print a cone of dispersion. If that cone is 1.5 MOA, a perfectly zeroed rifle can still put any single shot around three-quarters of an inch from the true center at 100 yards — that's what 1.5 MOA means.

So when you dial off a single shot, you're mostly correcting for random noise. The next shot lands somewhere else inside the cone, you dial again, and you end up walking circles around a zero you may have already had.

The center of a group averages that noise out. Statistically, the center of an n-shot group is about √n times more reliable than a single shot as an estimate of your true point of impact — a 4-shot center is roughly twice as trustworthy as one hole. That's the entire trick behind zeroing efficiently: measure once from a group center, correct once.

Step 1 — Get on paper without burning ammo

The first shots of a fresh scope mount can miss the paper entirely, and hunting for a miss is the most expensive part of a lazy zero. Bore sighting fixes it for free:

Step 2 — Fire one careful group at your zero distance

Step 3 — Measure the group center's offset (this is your one trip)

Walk down once, or pull the target during a cease-fire. You need two numbers: how far the center of the group sits from your point of aim horizontally, and how far vertically. Never measure the diagonal — it mixes both corrections into one useless number.

The ruler method

Eyeball the geometric center of the group (for three shots, the middle of the triangle), or be rigorous: measure each hole's horizontal and vertical distance from the aim point and average them. Measure to hole centers — paper tears and prints holes smaller than the bullet, so edges lie. On a 1-inch grid target this whole step is counting squares.

The photo method

Step 4 — Convert the offset to clicks and dial once

Scope clicks are angles, not inches, so the conversion depends on distance:

(One MOA is 1.047″ at 100 yards — not a clean inch. One MIL is 3.6″ at 100 yards, and exactly 1 cm per 0.1 MIL at 100 meters, which is why metric shooters like MILs.)

Worked example: your group center is 2.1″ low and 1.4″ right at 100 yards, with 1/4 MOA turrets. Vertical: 2.1 ÷ 0.26 ≈ 8 clicks up. Horizontal: 1.4 ÷ 0.26 ≈ 5 clicks left. Round to the nearest click, dial both, done.

Two things people get wrong: turret arrows show the direction the impact moves, so a low group means dialing UP; and offsets measured at 50 yards need the 50-yard click value, not the 100. Step 5 — Confirm. One correction is a hypothesis, not a zero.

After dialing, fire 2–3 more rounds at the same point of aim. If that confirmation group centers up within about a click of the aim point, you're zeroed — log it and record the conditions. If it's still measurably off, apply the small remaining correction and confirm again.

A first correction can land imperfectly for boring reasons: turrets that don't track exactly at their marked value, a scope or rings still settling into the mount, or plain aiming variance. That's why no serious shooter — and no honest app — certifies a zero off a single correction. The confirmation group is the cheapest insurance in shooting.

The honest shot count: bore-sight (0 rounds) + one 3-shot group + one 2-shot confirmation = 5 rounds when everything cooperates. The point isn't hitting a magic number — it's making one measured correction instead of chasing holes all afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 3-shot group really enough to zero?

It's enough to make one good correction — the center of three shots is a far better estimate of true point of impact than any single hole. It is not the end of the process: always confirm after dialing. For a zero you'll trust for precision work at distance, step up to a 5-shot first group and a 3–5 shot confirmation.

What distance should I zero at?

The one that matches how you shoot. 100 yards is standard for scoped centerfire; a 50-yard zero (re-crossing near 200 with common carbine loads) is popular for red-dot ARs; rimfire is usually 25 or 50. The method is identical at any distance — only the inches-per-click change.

Should I adjust after every shot?

No. Single shots are noise; group centers are signal. Dialing off one hole means correcting for randomness inside your rifle's cone of dispersion — it's how a 20-round zero happens. Fire the whole group, then make one correction from its center.

Is 1/4 MOA exactly 1/4 inch at 100 yards?

Close but no — it's about 0.26″, because one MOA is 1.047″ at 100 yards. And real turrets can deviate slightly from the marked value, which the confirmation group catches. If you shoot far enough for it to matter, a tall-target test will measure your turret's true click value.
