Zeroing a Pistol Red Dot: 10, 15, or 25 Yards?

Slide-mounted dots have taken over, and so has the argument about what distance to zero them. The honest answer: with common 9mm loads it matters less than the internet suggests — and the things that actually ruin pistol-dot zeros are click math, shooter wobble, and hardware settling, not the distance you picked.

Picking the distance

Here's why the stakes are low: 9mm is flat at pistol distances. For common loads, the difference in point of impact between a 10-yard and a 25-yard zero is on the order of an inch or less anywhere inside 25 yards. Pick one, shoot it well, and confirm at the others. A popular workflow — and the one we'd suggest — is zero at 10, confirm at 25.

Height over bore at close range

A slide-mounted dot sits roughly 0.75 to 1 inch above the bore — much less than a carbine's 2.5 inches (that's why the 36-yard-zero geometry doesn't transfer to pistols), but not nothing. Inside a few yards, the bullet strikes about that far below the dot no matter where you zeroed. On a chest-sized target it's irrelevant; on a small, precise target up close it's the difference between the shot you called and the shot you got. Know the offset; don't fight it.

The click math that catches everyone

Most pistol dots adjust in 1 MOA clicks — about 1 inch per click at 100 yards. At 10 yards, that same click moves impact only about a tenth of an inch. Printing an inch left at 10 yards means something like ten clicks of correction, and this is where most botched dot zeros come from: people dial 2–3 clicks, see nothing move, and start doubting the optic.

How to zero it, start to finish

  2. From a rest at 10 yards, shoot a careful 5-round group at one dot.

  4. Dial, shoot a confirmation group on a fresh dot, and check it centered.
  5. Move to 25 and confirm. If your range only offers odd distances, the app's proxy-zero mode computes where the group should print — the same idea as setting a 50-yard zero at 25, just scaled to pistol geometry.
A dot that's "close enough" at 10 can still hide a lean at 25 — distance magnifies angular error, which is the same reason short-range rifle proxies need confirming at full distance. Two confirmation groups are cheap insurance on a gun you might stake something on.

Ten or fifteen yards gets you a clean, honest zero; confirm at 25. The trajectory differences are small — shot-to-shot consistency at the bench matters far more than the distance debate.

Why am I hitting low at 3–5 yards?

Height over bore. The bullet starts about an inch below the dot and hasn't climbed to it yet. That offset exists with every zero distance.
